History of LASIK: Part-I

Although LASIK eye surgery remains fairly young in age, the usage of refractive eye surgery has a long history. Most people think of LASIK as a new procedure to treat bad vision. However, the first LASIK procedure in the United States was actually done over 16 years ago.

Refractive surgery was born over fifty years ago, when Professor Dr. Jose I. Barrager of Bogotá, Colombia developed a new technique to correct vision deficiencies. During this procedure, an instrument called a microkeratome was used to shave off a thin cap of corneal tissue. This cap was treated similar to a contact lens – it was removed, reshaped, and finally replaced onto the eye. This corrective procedure was called myopic keratomileusis (MKM for short) and Dr. Jose I. Barrager is considered by many to be the father of modern refractive surgery.

MKM was an important first step in vision correction surgery. It provided doctors with knowledge about how much of the cornea had to be left unaltered to provide a stable long-term result. MKM utilized a very rudimentary microkeratome, which is the instrument that today is mainly used to create the flap in LASIK surgery.

Continuing with the history of LASIK, we will throw some light on other achievements in future posts.

Had a "free consultation" today to see if I was a good candidate. If that is composed of 30 seconds with a technician to measure eyes - well I guess I was consulted. The rest was a quick sale about the $699/eye procedure "most likely" to create night vision problems (halo, etc.) and the introduction to the $1600/eye option that was much better. After a cold, rushed presentation of prices I was asked if I was ready to schedule. Felt like I was on a car lot. The red flag that bothered me the most was the caveat that if the surgery didn't go right and needed to be corrected - I would have to pay for that just like it was a new surgery. So... THEY mess up the procedure and want ME to pay for it. If I pay THEM to correct vision - why is it up to me if they don't succeed to pay again? Rushed atmosphere. Cold "consultation" and the bait-n-switch upsell will have me spending more where an actual doctor will advise me if I'm a good candidate or not.

I just had surgery with Dr. Selkin 4 days ago. My vision on the morning after was 20/25 however I do have dry eyes so I use the no preservative tear drops every hour.! Yesterday I started getting a stinging sensation which they did warm me about on my right eye. Today my left eye is perfect I am able to see very clear, however my right eye I can see better then before but my vision is slightly blurry. I see halos around lights at night. (I know I did get surgery just 4 day ago) I called the office today they said all is normal. I am hoping and praying what they said is true when they said my vision will improve over the next several months. What worries me is that it stays blurry. It's not like it gets better then goes blurry it has stayed blurry since yesterday without any improvement and seems to be getting a little worse. The stinging sinsation I felt last night was gone this morning but did come back around 6:00 this evening. I hope if it does not change for the better they will fix it without charging me. They did offer me a package for I believe 1900 that offered a lifetime plan. I called them because I feel I need to get it. I will keep everyone updated. I do want to mention the doctor and staff are absolutly wonderful and make you feel very comfortable. The front desk clerk is amazing. The office is very well kept up, organized and clean. Some of the staff has had lasik surgey and all really know their stuff.

prk eye surgery Post an update after your next appointment and keep in mind what my doc told me. Unlike lasik I should measure my vision improvement in weeks and not days. Good luck and keep putting those wetting drops in, it will help heal you faster even if your eyes don't feel dry.
